This is no marketing exercise: the combined system output from the new Golf GTE’s 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and electric motor setup is a punchy 204hp. Yet CO2 emissions are just 35g/km – meaning claimed average fuel economy of 188mpg. No wonder it looks all Tron-like in the pictures.
Cake had and eaten? VW’s got the desert spoons out for the 2014 Geneva Motor Show
Under the Golf GTE’s bonnet you’ll find a 150hp version of Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol engine – so far so normal.
But hidden away in the six-speed DSG there’s also a 102hp electric motor fed by water-cooled battery pack. Due to the usual hybrid combination losses, put the two together and you get 204hp – though each power source is also able to drive the Golf’s front wheels on its own.
